Today we’re going to take a look at the Delirium Books Horror Paperback Book Club.

About Delirium Books

Established in 1999, owned and operated by Shane Ryan Staley, Delirium Books has become a major publishing force in the field of horror fiction. Delirium won the 2004 Bram Stoker Award for Excellence in Specialty Press and has published over 130 titles. You can read about Delirium here. Delirium Books Horror Paperback Book ClubDue to the failing economic climate, Delirium ended their hardcover line (which used to have its own book club) and has opened up a digital e-book line. His dedication to publishing quality horror in trade paperbacks, however, hasn’t wavered.

With the closing of Shocklines and Clarksworld online bookstores, Shane Ryan Staley and Larry Roberts (publisher of Bloodletting Press) got together and created Horror Mall an online horror bookstore — which serves as the point of purchase for the Delirium Books Horror Paperback Book Club.

About the Book Club

When you join the Delirium Books Horror Paperback Book Club, you pay for you first book and you get to select a title already in print for free. When I joined, I had four titles to choose from. I got both the first month’s selection and the free title together.

Benjamin' Parasite by Jeff StrandYou get a 40% discount off the cover price. Even when you add shipping and handling your book costs less than it would in a bookstore — if you can find a bookstore that will carry Delirium titles. The books are trade paperbacks with print that is easy on the eyes (a plus for someone like me)

Each month you get a bill in your e-mail. You have ten days to pay and you can use paypal or a credit card. I like using paypal — its fast, easy and painless. Then your book shows up in your mailbox about a week later. There is no minimum number of books you need to buy. You can cancel anytime you wish.

How to Join

The Delirium Books Horror Paperback Book Club is offered through the Horror Mall. Click here to go to the Mall and order your subscription. And yes, this is an affiliate link. If you have a hatred of affiliate links, just go to horror-mall dot com and use the search engine in the upper left hand corner to find the book club.

Once you reach the page, scroll down and click on the “add to cart” button. On the next page, click on the “Proceed to Checkout” button. The next page will prompt you to login if you’re a previous Horror Mall customer or select the new customer option and register. You’ll need a paypal account or a credit card.

The Customer Service

The customer service is excellent and I’ve had a couple of occasions to test it.

Reservoir Gods by Brian KnightOn one occasion I received somebody else’s introductory package by mistake. It had that month’s book in it but also another book which had been someone else’s free copy. I used the online customer service help through Horror Mall and Mr. Staley himself wrote back to me. The result? One of the two books in the introductory package was the book I was to get that month anyway so he told me to keep it. He thanked me for reporting the problem so he could send another introductory package out to the customer and told me to keep the free copy.

Honestly I haven’t had any trouble with the Delirium Books Horror Paperback Book Club. I had a couple of problems with digital downloads from Horror Mall (who will be the ones helping you with problems in the book club) and they gave me fast curtious reponses even late at night.

The Book Selection

The horror novels published by Delirium are all original work. To the best of my knowledge I haven’t received one reprint or a title that had been published elsewhere.

Delirium offers up a mixture of established names, like Brian Keene, J. F. Gonzalez and Brian Knight as well as new names like Sandy DeLuca, David Jack Bell and Ronald Damien Malfi. The book club has introduced me to authors who have been around but I hadn’t had the pleasure to read before they showed up in my mailbox, people like Jeff Strand, Harry Shannon, Greg F. Gifune and more.

Primitive by J. F. GonzalezOne of my favorite acquisitions from the Delirium Books Horror Paperback Book Club was Brian Keene’s Unhappy Endings, a thick collection of short stories and novellas including two that were previously only available in expensive hardcover editions.

The majority of titles are full legnth novels — such as Primitive by J. F. Gonzalez, The Girl In The Woods by David Jack Bell and From Ashes by Sandy DeLuca. However, Unhappy Endings was a short story collection and New Dark Voices 2 contained three novellas.

In Conclusion

I highly recommend The Delirium Books Horror Paperback Book Club. You get one book a month and over the course of a year you get some well known horror authors as well as a few just starting out. You always get a quality book. And Delirium Books have a habit of publishing Stoker Award nominees and winners.

If you are a true horror fan and you want cutting edge work, this book club is ideal for you. Honestly, I can’t see going without a subscription to Leisure and Delirium. The majority of books that I want — both new works coming out and previously published works that are hard to get — wind up in these two clubs.
