SUMMARY:

Faith was once in prison for murder until Sunnydale was swallowed up in a pit. Now she is a felon on the lamb, doing the dirty jobs for a cell of Slayers until Giles shows up offering the dirtiest job of all — to assassinate another slayer. In exchange she’ll get a passport, freedom and money to live the rest of her life.

However, Lady Genevieve Savidge is a slayer from British aristocracy and being mentored by a Welsh warlock named Rodan to assassinate Buffy Summers. Killing her at long range is impossible and getting close enough to do it personally is dangerous. Of course, Faith agrees.

Faith, do you honestly believe you’re the first young person to have stumbled upon the notion of rebellion?

Faith manages to get close to Genevieve and strike up a friendship and at the same time displays her Slaying ability. Thinking she has found a sister in arms, Genevieve takes Faith into her confidence and reveals her plan to kill Buffy . . . something Faith finds difficult to resist.

The collection ends with a stand alone story where Buffy and Willow fly to visit a demon, contained in a rural cabin and guarded constantly. Buffy and Willow seek knowledge about Twilight but are shown instead images of their betrayal in the past and finally an image of a disastrous betrayal that will happen in the future — something that threatens to tear their friendship apart.

APPEAL:

The events in this series of comic books takes place about 6 months to a year after the series finale of the television show: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As the show ran for seven seasons, this comic book series is called Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight to easily distinguish it from all the other Buffy comics published by Dark Horse.

The stories assume you’ve watch the television series, although they generally provide a quick explanation or a flashback to bring you up to speed. It does make for a richer experience to have seen the series.

Former Clevelander Brian K. Vaughan gets the nod for an intense story about that bad-girl slayer Faith and then Buffy creator Joss Whedon pushes the story arc a little further in this one shot story about Buffy and Willow.

Wow. Your bad is way better than mine.

The characterizations are on target and pure Faith. We get to see things from Faith’s perspective and it isn’t pretty, but it does explain her actions a bit better. Brian has mastered the unique use of vocabulary so familiar to Buffy fans. A new relationship between Faith and Giles is defined by the end of the story arc.

One difference from the television show is that neither Brian nor Joss is limited by a budget or the state of special effects technology. So they can open up the story with an attack of vampire demon children or send the story to meet a giant demon that doesn’t look even vaguely human.
