Dark Arts Horror Anthology: Like A Chinese Tattoo

by The Undead Rat on June 27, 2010

This weekend is almost done and we’re only half way through the Dark Arts Books anthologies . . . which means we’ll cover the last three next weekend.

Dark Arts Books publishes horror anthologies that are samplers, each one contains several horror short stories by each of four different horror authors. It’s a nice way to try a new writer.

Like A Chinese Tattoo: Twelve Inscrutably Twisted Tales edited by Bill Breedlove, features Cullen Bunn, Rick R. Reed, David Thomas Lord, and J. A. Konrath.

Unusual, weird and wonderful, herein are twelve stories from the minds of four supremely talented — and twisted — authors. From the curse of the living dead to vengeance from beyond the grave, from the darkest corner of Africa to the bowels of the local cemetery, these tales are as unique and as mysterious as . . . well, a Chinese Tattoo!

For fans of J. A. Konrath’s Jack Daniels mystery series, this collection includes a Harry McGlade novella, “The Necro Files.” (McGlade also appears in the just-announced Suckers novelette from Delirium Books, co-written with Dark Arts Books alum Jeff Strand).

In addition to the hysterical “Necro Files,” the book offers Rick R. Reed’s dark revenge tale “Moving Toward the Light,” David Thomas Lord’s deceptively creepy “The White Room” and Cullen Bunn’s darkly horrifying “Tomorrow, When The Demons Come” (as well as “Granny Kisses,” one of Cullen’s insanely twisted World Horror Convention Gross-Out stories!)

And those are just a few of the 12 offerings!

Cullen Bunn is primarily a comic book script writer and a short story author. His series The Damned is published by Oni Press and the first story arc was collected in The Damned Volume 1: Three Days Dead. Hopefully the next two story arcs will be collected soon. Meanwhile you can also see his work in the second of the Immortal Weapons mini-series (a spin-off from the new Iron Fist series.) Immortal Weapons #2: Bride of Nine Spiders.

Talking about Rick R. Reed, Unzipped magazine said: “You could call him the Stephen King of gay horror.” For a more mainstream horror book try High Risk. Among the gay horror titles by Reed, try Incubus, Deadly Vision or The Blue Moon Cafe.

David Thomas Lord also writes gay horror fiction and is the author of a pair of vampire books — Bound In Blood: The Erotic Journey of a Vampire and its long delayed (because of an accident and a long recovery) sequel Bound In Flesh.

J. A. Konrath is the author of the Lt. Jacqueline “Jack” Daniels thriller series as well as Suckers with Jeff Strand. Writing as Jack Kilborn he has published Afraid and kindle book editions Endurance (A Novel of Terror) and Horror Stories. The free short story he wrote with Blake Crouch has been revised with edited scenes put back in and is now available as Serial Uncut (Extended Edition).
