Let’s Make this Website Better

by The Undead Rat on January 13, 2010

I’ve spent a lot of time dithering over how to write this. I finally decided to break these questions down into three large sections to be posted today, Friday and Saturday.

There are two ways you can answer these questions: either leave comments below if you don’t mind them being public or use the Contact Me page (now fixed!) to talk to me privately.

I can’t promise to respond to each comment but I will read all of them. I won’t promise to enact each idea, but I will give each on careful consideration.

Be specific with your comments. Saying “this website stinks” doesn’t help me nearly as much as “I come here for the book lists — the summaries don’t interest me.” Of course, please don’t use profanity or spam the system.

Today the questions will focus on the blog content. Friday’s will be about the content of the book lists and Saturday’s will be about extras.

Today’s Questions: Blog Content

The Blog Content: Generally on weekdays I post summaries on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They are readers’ advisory summaries and not reviews. I generally don’t critique a work or evaluate it in any way. I only post about stories I enjoy to some degree. Stories I dislike do not get written about.

  1. Summaries vs. Reviews: But do you like summaries or would you rather read reviews? I don’t like reading reviews so I can’t promise them — I don’t think I’m hardwired that way. But if the demand is big enough, I may look into other alternatives.

  2. Formats: Mondays I usually post about horror ebooks or chapbooks and I was thinking about adding audio books in this year. Tuesdays I post about horror graphic novels. Fridays I post about horror novels. Do these formats cover the basis or am I forgetting something? Should I be so structured or looser? Do you hate particular formats? Is there something I should or shouldn’t be talking about?

  3. Frequency: I try to post Mon-Wed-Fri for the summaries and Sat and Sun for the anthology/short story collection posts. Is that a good pace or do you want more? Do you want less?

  4. Additional Material: Periodically I interrupt the book summary postings for special occasions such as the the recent Black Quill Award nominations or guest posts like John Paul Allen’s story about writing Gifted Trust. Do you enjoy these or are they a bother? Perhaps I should add more horror news? Is there something I haven’t posted that you think I should? Do you want guest posts? What guests would interest you?

The ball is in your court. I’ve posted some questions above but really anything can be commented upon. What do you think?
