Joe Hill wasn't able to attend, however someone read his acceptance speech. In it he mentioned that the idea for <i>Heart-Shaped Box</i> came to him at a time in his life when he was certain he would never be able to write a novel. In fact HSB was to be a novella. So he was surprised when it blossomed into a full length story.
