Welcome to the Void

by The Undead Rat on November 15, 2008

“He crept into her mind. In her blue-water dream, his dark ether seeped like spilt oil, blackening her sea of mermen with their emerald flesh and crystal grins, poisoning her vision with his inhuman skull-like face, which floated before her own.”

Leslie Starr goes home to attend the funeral of her best friend only to find her death was bait to lure her closer to the mysterious Coatl who seeks to make her a gift to his god-like masters of Xilalba.

SUMMARY:

The netherworld of ancient Central and South America, Xibalba, contains shadowy demons and soul devouring gods and heroes.

The “Dark Man”, a human who calls himself Coatl, walks between the worlds of Earth and Xibalba to haunt the dreams of his victims and steal their souls for the masters of Xibalba to torture and devour.

The Void

But the prize soul belongs to Leslie Starr — unknowingly harboring a mysterious force that could destroy the depraved gods of Xibalba or release them upon the Earth — who knows there’s something lurking in her head, but has no idea what it is or how to use it.

APPEAL:

Jacobs does a superb job creating a female protagonist who has lived in constant fear and under perpetual threat of attack for most of her life, yet isn’t a coward. Many horror authors fail to communicate the fear their protagonists feel.

READALIKES:

If you like Teri A. Jacobs, try Clive Barker’s Books of Blood 1-3 or the The Hellbound Heart: A Novel. If you enjoyed visiting Xibalba, you might want to read about Mephistopolis in Edward Lee’s City Infernal.
